Three weeks after traveling to Arizona, a 13-month-old, female Labrador retriever developed draining tracts in the right hind limb. Primary cutaneous coccidioidomycosis was diagnosed. Initial treatment with itraconazole resulted in exacerbation of clinical signs. Histopathology was suggestive of a cutaneous drug eruption. Discontinuation of the itraconazole caused resolution of the drug eruption. Successful treatment of the fungal infection was achieved using ketoconazole.

Human immunodeficiency virus and feline immunodeficiency virus are both lentiviruses that cause immunosuppressive disease. Similarities between these diseases have promoted the study of feline immunodeficiency virus as a model for human immunodeficiency virus. Not only have lentiviruses been found in domestic cats but they have been found in nondomestic felids as well. Florida panthers, African lions, and other nondomestic felids have been found to have antibodies directed against lentiviruses and each nondomestic cat has antibodies to a virus that is specific for that species. The phylogenetic relationships of these lentiviruses have been studied and mapped using nucleic acid sequencing technology. Phylogenetic mapping has been an important step for future development of vaccines and antiviral therapy.

The diagnosis of diabetes mellitus is relatively straightforward; however, there are important differences in clinical presentation and the incidence of stress-induced hyperglycemia in cats compared with dogs. This article discusses the pathophysiology that leads to the clinical signs of diabetes mellitus in cats and dogs, compares and contrasts the presenting clinical signs of diabetes mellitus in these animals, and reviews the latest developments in differentiating stress-induced hyperglycemia from diabetes mellitus in cats.
